Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a nationally recognized program where clinicians give new books to families and teach in the clinic visit how to engage their children in a developmentally appropriate way to read. Data has shown that these projects have increased early literacy and language skills, particularly among disadvantaged and more marginalized families.

Seattle Children’s Hospital serves a high proportion of individuals who are economically disadvantaged, and many children have high levels of medical complexity. Families often come to us looking for ways they can help improve their child’s developmental outcome in the setting of these challenges. By engaging in this program, we can give families something that they can do to help their child develop, empowering both our institution and the families we serve to play a pivotal role in their children’s development and success.

We are looking for potential donors to help sponsor this nationally known and vetted program. Each book costs about $2.50, and we are hoping to serve not only the families being served in Neurodevelopmental Clinic this year (about 4,000 children), but to expand this program in a more hospital wide fashion to include all children admitted to the hospital. Any ongoing support would be greatly valued and appreciated, not only by the providers, but by the families and children as well. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
