Supporting research to find more effective, less toxic treatments
Katie Belle Neuroblastoma Research Fund
In 2010, we established a fund at Seattle Children's Hospital in honor of our daughter, Katie. The Katie Belle Neuroblastoma Research Fund supports scientific research that will improve the effectiveness and reduce the toxic side effects of treatment for neuroblastoma. In these last few years we've made a significant impact, bringing a promising radiation treatment for neuroblastoma to Seattle in 2012 and more recently funding breakthrough immunotherapy research being conducted at the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research. All of the money raised pays for clinical trials being conducted at Seattle Children's Hospital under the direction of Dr. Julie Park, one of the nation's leading experts on neuroblastoma.

Katie was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at 3 1/2 and endured 17 months of harsh treatment that included multiple surgeries, 6 rounds of chemotherapy, 2 stem cell transplants, 14 days of radiation, and 5 months of experimental immunotherapy. She spent over 200 nights in the hospital during that year and a half. At diagnosis, she had a 30% chance of survival. Thankfully, she finished treatment at age 5 and is now thriving. She loves school, has a wonderful group of friends, and is a happy kid. You'd never know all that she has been through. But if you read the blog we kept in treatment, you know that Katie's battle with neuroblastoma was brutal and that she is likely to have complications throughout her life. So far she has hearing loss, a thyroid hormone deficiency, growth hormone deficiency, some neurological impairments, and there will surely be more to come. Additionally, she is at risk for developing leukemia from the dozens of doses of chemo she received, and is not out of the woods for a recurrence of neuroblastoma. We are grateful for how far she has come, but we are not satisfied. The kids who follow in Katie's footsteps should have better options and better prognoses. Through the Katie Belle Neuroblastoma Research Fund, we are helping to accelerate those developments.
