Kawasaki Disease Research
You can improve the lives of children. Dr. Michael Portman's team is making dramatic advancements for children with Kawasaki Disease, yet there is much more that can be done with your support.
Kawasaki Disease (KD) is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children in the U.S. and can lead, in rare cases, to heart attack and death. KD is an inflammatory condition affecting a child’s coronary arteries. KD affects children of all ages—most often kids from 6 months to 5 years old. As there is no specific test to confirm the KD diagnosis, the disease is often unrecognized or treated too late. Many children with KD experience long-term crippling heart problems including coronary artery aneurysms. These aneurysms can scar and form stenoses requiring interventional catheterization procedures or coronary artery bypass surgery.
Our goal: helping children with Kawasaki Disease have healthy lives. Dr. Portman leads an internationally recognized KD research group at Seattle Children’s. Your support helps us perform research which will develop new diagnostic tests and more effective therapies for KD.
